TREVOR SAT BACK in his chair, raised his arms and locked his fingers behind his head. He watched Jamie as he read over the weekly and monthly numbers for the club. By the way his friend’s eyebrows rose and how his smile made his lips twitch, Trevor knew that Jamie was impressed. Swerve Montreal had had a couple of killer months, more than doubling sales from the previous years, and they had received many fantastic reviews on online forums.

Jamie finally looked up, smiled at Trevor and closed the laptop. “Trev, man. The numbers are just great here. You’re outperforming every other bar in the area and the rest of the Swerve locations in the country. Reviews are all great, and these numbers—” he held out the reports in his hand “—they speak for themselves. I don’t know what you’re doing here, man, but keep it up. I could use another you at every other bar. I’ve been getting some reports of inconsistencies and bartending problems at some other locations. You know we can’t have that.”

Trevor took the compliment and gave a pleased but modest shrug. “I know, consistency is key. And thanks, but it’s not just me. We’ve got a good team here.” He wondered what issues were happening at other clubs. He wanted to ask, but he didn’t like to get into general business issues. He looked after Swerve’s Montreal location and only that club.

“And it shows that you can’t discount a great leader.” Jamie pointed at Trevor. “I know, with you, my baby is in good hands.”

“I’m assuming, in this case only, that Swerve is your baby and not Maya.” Montreal was Jamie’s first location and the one that was nearest to his heart. His office headquarters were even located on the floors above them at the club.

Jamie laughed. “Yes. In this case only will I refer to Swerve as my baby, and she is the only one who will be in your hands, never Maya. But in all seriousness, you’re great at what you do, man. You’re one hell of a bartender, but you really know how to manage this place. And that is why I have this for you.”

Jamie reached into his messenger bag and pulled out an envelope. He handed it to Trevor, who took it apprehensively. “What’s this?”

Jamie sat back nonchalantly as Trevor lifted the flap of the envelope. “It’s just a little token of appreciation, a bonus, for all of the good work you’ve done here.”

Jamie pulled out the check and his eyes widened at the numbers written on it. Shock made him speechless for a moment before he put it on his desk and slid it back to Jamie. “I can’t take that. It’s too much.”

Jamie pushed it back in Trevor’s direction. “Stop it. Take it. You’re worth one hundred times that amount. The company is doing well, and you’re a big part of the reason why. You’ve been with me since the very beginning and I don’t think I could have done any of this without you.
